Adding a hot tub to existing deck

by Keith

I have an existing walk out 24x18 deck 9' high with 4 lollys in front. I want to to place a hot tub right in the corner closest to the house.

The deck has 2x12 joists and I want to be able to carry the load of the tub with people in it.

Can I just add a support beam supported by 6x6 posts with concrete footings? Maybe use a 2-2x12s for the beam. How wide? What does anyone think?

Should I sister the existing joists? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Really need to see drawings
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

Its practically impossible to provide guidance in a written format like this without seeing exact drawings and then doing actual engineering calculations to make doubly sure you will be safe.

Bottom line is this is not something you should do without having an engineer confirm what you are planning to building will work and be safe.

There are a number of really helpful articles on this topic of adding hot tubs to decks and I will point you to a few of them:

Design tips
Soil bearing capacity
Expanding deck for hot tub

These will help you out for sure.
