Appropriate Depth for a Partially Sunken Hot Tub?

by Hot Tub Owner

We've recently purchased a hot tub and are partially sinking it into the deck...

Not sure what the ratio should be for the tub to be above the deck so that it is easiest to get in and out of without using a step...

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Spas need maintenance. Imagine crawling under a deck to service it.
Some dealers will refuse to be involved.

How High to Set a Hot Tub Into Deck
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

Here are my thoughts but keep in mind other experienced might have differing opinions. I like to see about 12" of the tub exposed above the decking and if possible I like to not completely surround the tub with decking.

I prefer to have only two or three sides of the tub mated up against the decking and this is so that I can still easily gain access to the access panels in the tub for occasional maintenance issues.

It's also easier to place into the deck. I have done it the other way and just dropped a tub into an opening on the deck on to a concrete slab but it required using straps and a number of strong guys working together.

I just find that a 12" reveal defines the hot tub area nicely in a deck.
