What is the proper method of attaching 2"x42" fir balusters to a fir railing system? Should nails or screws be used?

Thanks what size screw and how many per baluster? Is there a standard building code connection diagram/sket?. I recently saw this old house episode (new porch/railsystem) and tom silva used nail gun and shot 4 - 1 1/2 " nails @ each end of baluster. Thant would be much quicker.. Does it meet code??

Just predrill the balusters with a bit slightly smaller than the screw. There won't be any splitting if you do that.

Definitely use screws but you haven't explained at all how you are building your railing system so there is not much else to say.
