Removing Grass Under Deck

Is there any requirement to remove the grass under a new wood deck? The deck will be no more than 2 feet off the ground.

Removing Grass Under a Deck
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

It is not always essential to remove grass under a deck unless it is a cosmetic issue that you wish to address.

Some decks that are very low to the ground will effectively block any light getting through so the grass will die naturally.

However there may be enough light through some of the cracks that an errant strand might survive and poke through. Easy enough to deal with.

For a deck that is 2 feet above grade you might want to remove the grass, lay down some landscape fabric and cover it with a fine stone.

Two feet of space is probably enough for light to keep the grass growing to some degree and it will be very difficult to cut.
