What Surface Underneath a Waterproof Deck?

by Nick

We have just had the rear of our house waterproofed and want to build a new deck. The gound cover is now just dirt infill. What type of surface or base should go beneath a deck?

Surface or Soil Underneath a Deck
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

The surface under a deck can be anything from the existing soil to concrete to gravel and beyond.

The more light exposure under the deck the more likely you will have grass and weeds sprouting. So you might want to consider placing landscaping fabric over the soil and then covering with pea gravel or wood chips.

Of course you could also pour a slab of concrete if there is enough height underneath the deck.

This area should have at least a 3 % slope away from the house to promote water flow.

I hope this response helps as I may have misinterpreted the question. If any other visitors have some helpful comments to help out please contribute.
