Deck Rails and baluster spacing

I have built a deck around our above ground pool but am not sure how far apart the rails need to be so a child cannot get his/her head stuck. Can you help me out?

Check this diagram for spacing

I guess a soda can will do the trick but if you really want to build something properly I would check out the railing diagram on this page as it shows you exactly the spacing between balusters you can do.

Basically 4" maximum is the rule and a child would have to have a very small head to fit through that. But you could make it smaller if you wanted.

Try using a soda can as a spacer when you are installing the balusters.
