Do it Your Selfer Hot Tub Deck

I am a do it yourselfer and want to put a hot tub on my deck.

I was thinking of using 2x6 spaced at 2 foot centers and spanning between 2x8 beams. The beams would be spaced at 6 feet apart.

Then I was going to double up the 2x6 joists under the hot tub. Would this be strong enough to support a five man tub?

Building a Deck To Support A Hot Tub
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

Many people want to know how about building a deck to support a hot tub and how strong it must be. In fact a gentlemen asked me the same question and I had an engineer who created his own construction software to a detailed analysis for me.

Go to this page https://www.decksgo.com/hot_tub_deck_design.html and read the detailed analysis. You can also go to this page https://www.decksgo.com/construction_software.html for a more general discussion.

In a nut shell if you go with 12" joist centers, using 2x8s for joists and then 2-2x8s for beams at 6 foot centers you will be fine. Of course, the results of the test are much more detailed and should be quite helpful to you.

Our calculation included the weight of the tub, water, people and the deck. I hope that helps out out.
