Extending Cantilever For Deck Balcony

by Jane
(Cochrane, AB)

My deck is cantilevered just under 24". It is built with 2x8 joists 24" on center.

I plan to replace them with 2x8 joists 12" on center to accommodate composite decking and would like to extend the cantilever to 36" out from the house.

What limits are in the building code?

Extending Cantilevered Joists
by: Editor - Rich Bergman

How far to extend your cantilevered joists back into your floor joists of your house based on 12" centers is definitely a question that should be properly answered by your local building department in your town.

They answer theses questions all the time and have the tables right in front of them.

It could be as simple as a 3:1 ratio but you have to realize that this varies upon wood species and joist spacing. It can also get more complicated if your floor joist are not parallel to your cantilevered joists.

So take the time to just make the call or drop in to your building department.

If any one has better advice please feel free to contribute.
