I need to get a soil report

by Jay
(Los Angeles, CA)

I am building a second story deck off my bedroom and it is 9 feet of the ground. I need to get a soil report and do not know the first thing about doing this. Any info to get me started would be great.

Geo technical soil analysis
by: Editor-Rich Bergman

Getting a soil report from an experienced geo technical engineer in your local area is one of the smartest things you can ever do. Geo Technical engineers are the specialists for this area.

Most engineers already know the soil types in your area and can often give you basic guidance for minimal cost or can direct you to public sources such as your city which usually will have a map of the soil types in the area.

These are often you cheapest first steps.

Sometimes however that can be unique conditions among those typical soil types such as bio mass material that is rotting below. In those cases you have to remove any bio mass and replace with engineered fill, usually gravel to achieve stability.

For building a house this is an absolute must. For a deck its also important but the stakes are a little lower.

If you do not have any idea what kind of soil you are on I suggest you follow the basic soil tests I have provided in the information tabs (see the ? symbol) on the footing calculator under Calculators on the horizontal nav bar. Click on the "?" beside Soil Bearing Capacity.

Footing Calculator

These are simple tests you can do by yourself to get a good idea of what you are dealing with.
