Pool Decking

by Grant Downham

I wish to build a decking around my pool.

The issue that I have is that the top of the pool is recessed level with the existing paving.I would like to avoid raising this level too much. What is the minimum level that I will need to raise the decking above the pool?

Any assistance that you can offer would be apreciated.

Thanks

Wood Decking Inground Pool
by: Editor-Rich Bergman

Wood pool decking is an option for you however from the picture it is hard tell all the details. It appears to be an inground pool and the coping appears flush with the stone paving. If that is the case and you wish to have wood decking that is flush with the coping around the pool you have some work ahead of you.

Unfortunately the only option is to excavate. But if you do this it may cause other issues which you should consider.

Is your pool designed so that the top 12" or so does not have to have soil behind it to support or lend strength to the pool wall itself? If not, then do not dig away the soil next to it.

If this is permissible then you must build in a wood frame that can rest on sleepers so that your decking does not occupy too much vertical space. This does seem like a lot of work and I wonder if it is the right option for you.

Is this a common thing in your area? You should investigate this before going down this route.
