Roof deck and Outdoor fire place

Our new house is located in a major city. We have a roof deck with a gas hookup (I assume for a grill). My question is can we safely put an outdoor fireplace up there?

Gas fireplaces with artificial "gas logs" are smokeless and odorless. Many models are manufactured as self contained kits installed by a contractor or even the home owner depending on their skills.

Check with your local building department to verify building codes.

The Chimney 2-3-10 Rule is the guideline for determining proper chimney height. Improper or inadequate draw of the combustion exhaust gas can cause major safety problems for the home's occupants.

It's not so much a question of if you can - because surely it can be done. But it is more a question of whether the city or town will permit such a use. A quick phone call or visit to your town's website and zoning or bylaws will answer that for you.

It would likely depend on the type of fireplace. Some are gas only, other use gas to light wood and it acts like a hybrid. That may be more problematic if embers flying around area an issue. Smoke in urban areas is also frowned upon.

So check with your local bylaws.
