Yes you can.
Although the post anchor is designed specifically for 4x4 posts the dimensions are such that you can actually use post sizes from 3"x3" to 3.75"x3.75".
However if you are going to use a smaller size post it should probably be a harder wood. Hardwoods can be tricky to install the anchor with because of the density of the wood and require special installation instructions.
In addition there will be 6x6 anchors available for Spring 2008.
