To cover or not to cover?

Hi guys

So I have trex composite decking and was wondering what is the best way to protect it during the winter.
I see a lot of comments about covering decking with Tarp yet equally see comments to never cover it....with it being composite and not wood, would it be ok to cover?
Also although i have trex decking, the posts are actually timber....(don't ask, long story that resulted in me being given trex decking for the price of wood decking due to a big mix up the company made...absolute result for me as you can imagine! Only the timber frame and posts were already fitted and concreted in)
So back to my question, is it safe to cover the timber posts or wrap them in anything? Like plastic or even heavy duty liners?
Any advice would be grately appreciated.
